RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
