Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to contest specific calls made by the official, following the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
